Price hike after Diwali from Mobile Companies

Mobile companies may opt for price hikes post-Diwali with the dollar touching a high of Rs 49.95. Among the handset marketers, companies like Spice Mobiles, Meridian Mobile and HTC confirmed of 15% price hike after Diwali.

Leading mobile phone manufacturers like Motorola, Sony Ericsson, and Samsung are watching the exchange rate closely to follow suit.

Handset manufacturers import around 60% of the components from China and Taiwan. Consequently, this is a double expense for manufacturers as even the Chinese yuan is weakening against the dollar. One dollar was worth 6.85 yuan till date.

Almost all the new models of all the mobile phone brands will see a price increase of 12-15%. This is mainly because of the import costs that have gone up dramatically over the last few weeks.

LG Company is just waiting and watching about the recent happenings and due to the competition, they are not going in for a price hike this week. But an official source informed that if the dollar rises further after Diwali, they will certainly take a call on this.

However, the market leader Nokia continues to remain silent on the issue.

'Father' of mobile phones criticises iPhone

The man who helped to invent the mobile phone has criticised Apple's iPhone for being overly complicated and hard to use.

Martin Cooper, a former researcher at Motorola who made the world's first ever phone call from a mobile phone on April 3, 1973, told Forbes that he had only used his iPhone for a few weeks before giving it away to his grandson.

"A phone that's an internet appliance, an MP3 player, a camera and a whole bunch of other stuff doesn't make a lot of sense," he said. "You try to build a universal device that does all things for all people, and guess what? It doesn't do anything very well."

He also criticized the telecoms industry for its "upside down" practices. In particular, he questioned why wireless operators were still installing mobile phone masts outside when he said the majority of conversations occurred indoors.

"We were promised affordable, ubiquitous broaband wireless for everyone," he said. "That promise is still just a promise."

He said that femtocells - mobile phone stations connected by broadband internet and capable of boosting the network signal inside buildings - could be the answer.

"Where the cell sites ought to be is where the people are," he said.

However, Mr Cooper was full of praise for Google's Android open-source operating system for mobile phones, citing it as an example of the sort of open platform that would allow wireless devices to reach their full potential.

The first phone to run Android, the T-Mobile G1, goes on sale in the UK today. It makes its debut in a crowded marketplace dominated at one end by the likes of Nokia and Sony Ericsson, and by BlackBerry and Apple at the other. Apple recently announced that it had sold more than 13 million iPhones since the device went on sale in July last year.

Nokia's 'iPhone Killer' - A 2009 Event

With touchscreen phones all the rage, and U.S. telcos following AT&T's lead of cutting the price of Apple's iPhone, it would seem Nokia will be left out of the smart-phone party this year.

The Finnish phone giant won't have its closely-watched 5800 phone - Nokia's music-loaded take on the iPhone - available here until sometime in the first half of next year, according to people familiar with the phone. Nokia wasn’t immediately available for comment.

And even when it arrives, Nokia has lacked a big U.S. phone partner that would provide the subsidy necessary to put it under the $200 range. At full price, it will have a hard time making a big splash.

"You could look at it as having a 100% upside," says Nielson IAG analyst Roger Entner, referring to Nokia's measly share of the U.S. market. Make that a potential upside of 95.5% since Nokia’s slice of the U.S. market has now fallen a percentage point from year-ago levels to 4.5%.

These numbers were part of Nokia's overall solid third-quarter performance reported Thursday. Nokia posted an adjusted profit of 44 cents a share, down from the 55 cents it netted last year, but in line with analysts estimates. Sales fell 5% to $16.4 billion from $17.3 billion in the year-ago quarter and below the $17.2 billion street estimate.

After hitting a new four-year low, Nokia shares rebounded a bit Thursday up 4% as investors took some confidence from the fact that it met estimates.

As Nokia predicted, its worldwide market share fell to 38% in the third quarter from 40% in the prior period. The decline, according to Nokia, reflects the company’s unwillingness to cut phone prices amid a heated price war in some regions.

Nokia has managed to grab and hold onto the No.1 phone supplier position by honing its skills at making low- and medium-priced phones for a global audience. This focus on the mainstream has caused Nokia to be consistently late to fashion trends like flip phones, ultrathin designs and now touchscreens.

After a strong start in the smart-phone wars with over half the global market in 2007, Nokia has dropped to a 35% slice in the third quarter from 48% of the market in the second quarter, according to Morgan Stanley analyst Jim Dawson. The alarming sequential drop is a reflection of how strong rivals like Apple and Research in Motion have grown. The smart-phone market will get a new challenger later this month with the arrival of Google's Android-powered G1 phone at T-Mobile.

But while 2008 is not going to be a big year here for Nokia, the trends - aside from the slumping global economy - are promising overall.

Each player comes from with a different specialty to the smart-phone market, says Entner. Apple and Google aim for a strong Internet experience and RIM's BlackBerry Storm hopes to capitalizes on its successful e-mail background with a touchscreen design. "Nokia comes from a mobile phone approach," says Entner.

"Nokia sees the phone as an integrated device." says Entner. In the past three years, Nokia has acquired mobile e-mail shop Intellisync, GPS mapper Navteq and digital media delivery system Loudeye in an effort to control the delivery of services like e-mail, navigation, photography, music, videos, games and the Internet.

Of course, all this will matter more in the U.S. when Nokia can deliver the device.

iPhone Killer Nokia 5800 XpressMusic now in India

Nokia has launched the latest "iPhone killer" in India, its first touchscreen mobile phone, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, which is expected to give Apple Inc.'s iconic iPhone a run for its money.

The feature-packed phone, said D. Shivakumar, managing director, Nokia India, is a better converged device than Apple's iPhone 3G. "What iPhone did was to bring the touch element to a multimedia converged device. Since we are already the leader in converged devices in India, Nokia 5800 will be a revolutionary launch from our stable," he said.

Unlike the iPhone which comes with a 2-megapixel camera, Nokia 5800 is equipped with a 3.2-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens, LED flash and video capability.

While the phone's virtual QWERTY keyboard is ideal for text messaging, email and instant messaging, the WiFi, 3G, GPRS, dual-band WCDMA, HSDPA, WLAN (802.11 b/g) and HSCSD support ensures wireless access to the internet.

The Symbian 60-based phone is capable of playing audio and video files in multiple formats and for the music or movie buffs, this is a boon as it comes with a whopping 8GB microSD card (note: 5800 has built-in 128MB memory) and for those who want more, an optional 16GB card.

In addition, the phone has a crystal clear 3.2-inch display and a tilt sensor (similar to Apple's accelerometer) and an in-built A-GPS receiver with voice navigation.

Other features include virtual keypad with stylus input support, Bluetooth 2.0, handwriting recognition software, FM radio, built-in surround sound stereo speakers with eight-band graphic equalizer, Nokia Maps, haptic touch technology, Mobile Transfer Protocol support, and TV out - video cable included - that allows streaming of multimedia.

According to tech analysts, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic wins hands down in several departments, including:

[1] A battery which is removable and has a better and longer life

[2] A better camera. Nokia has 3.2-megapixel camera with video recording capability as compared to iPhone's basic 2-megapixel camera

[3] A better screen resolution. Nokia's display screen is smaller than the iPhone (3.2-inch as against 3.5-inch) but the the resolution is better on the Nokia 5800 with 640x360 pixels against 480x320 pixels for the iPhone.

[4] MMS support.

[5] Adobe Flash support (Apple claims that Flash may slow down browsing on iPhone and hence the device does not support Flash)
