Hot Mobile Startup Ideas From Industry Top Designers
The rapid evolution of the cell phone is destine to change our lives the way the Internet has since the public flood gates opened a decade ago.
So what imaginative applications are already doing this? Here's the answer, according to a panel of industry designers at the Mobilize conference in San Francisco (pictured):
Jyri Engestrom, an entrepreneur at Google: In Finland, Finnair will send an SMS message when a plane is late and let passengers check in by SMS. People also pay for parking and the tram with SMS.
Jason Devitt, CEO of Skydeck: The Peak e-mail device is a single-purpose handheld for mobile e-mail. "I don't know how successful they will be," says Devitt, but the user experience is interesting.
Jeff Taylor, a director of global marketing at Hutchison Whampoa: the Loopt location-aware service finds friends and places, and is "grounded in the real world of normal behavior."
Rachel Hinman, mobile design strategist at Adaptive Path: Twitter's communication service extends from computer to cell phone and is "like a little present from a friend."

Nokia Wahoo: Is this Nokia's Next Project?
No idea why Nokia's next project is known as Wahoo, as it sounds really close to the ailing Internet giant, Yahoo!. It would be interesting to see how Wahoo will do when it is released, but take a gander at the specifications and judge for yourself.
* Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
* Dual-band UMTS/HSDPA (850MHz/1900MHz)
* Internal 2.2? display at 240 × 320 resolution
* External 1.36? display at 128 × 160 resolution
* 2 megapixel camera with flash
* Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP connectivity
* Four hours of UMTS talk time
Sad to see Nokia throw in a 2.5mm headphone jack instead of the more widely used 3.5mm version. Word on the street has it that this will be available via AT&T when it finally arrives on US shores.

Nokia Launches Eseries Range - Nokia E63
Nokia announced the latest addition to its Eseries range, the Nokia E63, designed for people who need to manage their business and personal lives equally well. Building on the success of the Nokia E71, the company's flagship messaging device, the Nokia E63 brings the QWERTY keyboard form factor to a broader audience at a great price. The Nokia E63 is expected to begin shipping in the coming weeks for an estimated retail price of EUR 199, before taxes and subsidies.
"Our research shows that people want a device that deals with both their personal and professional lives, but helps them to separate the two. When someone sits down at lunch, they want to update their social network or browse their personal email account and they don't want work getting in the way of that. It's another great case of technology adapting to the people that use it," says Soren Petersen, Senior Vice President, Nokia. "The Nokia E63 is a new proposition for Eseries - a messaging device where people will be just as involved in their social network as they are in their business network."
