Indian Government Bans Import of Mobile Phones Sans IMEI Number
According to the latest news, the Government of India has banned the import of mobile phones which do not have the IMEI number. The IMEI number is a 15 digit code that is found printed inside the battery compartment of the phone. At the moment, it is estimated that around 25 million mobile phones in the Indian market do not have an IMEI number.
This move to ban such mobile phones has come in the wake of grave security concerns about terrorists using mobile phones without IMEI numbers for their nefarious activities. This move is expected to hit a number of Chinese and Taiwanese manufacturers, as they were routing such mobiles into the grey market.
Mobile networks can identify the IMEI number and allow access only to mobile phones that have a valid number. Thus, operators can identify mobile phones without an IMEI number and deny access to the network. Moreover, only genuine devices can be allowed network access and illegal use can thus be curbed.
Earlier, the department of telecommunications (DoT) had asked mobile operators in India to disconnect all mobile phones without the IMEI number. Those individuals who have a mobile number without an IMEI number can obtain one through the Mobile Alliance of India which will setup 1600 outlets across the country to provide the numbers. Those individuals who fail to obtain the IMEI numbers will have their services disconnected from June 30 onwards.

Tips on Protect Your Mobile Phone in Rain During Monsoon
Now that the monsoons are near, you must be really anxious at the back of your mind about protecting your precious mobile handset from the rains. So, if your handset is not waterproof, there's no way you are going to make your handset waterproof yourself. However, follow a few tips mentioned in this article and you will surely be able to protect your mobile from the rains.
The simplest way to protect your mobile is to carry a plastic bag with you every where. You'll surely find the plastic bags lying around your house quite handy. However, avoid the thinner ones as they have a tendency to tear. Simply put your mobile inside and wrap the bag around it many times. Zip lock bags also come in handy, and you can get one from a nearby general store or supermarket. Since there are various sizes available, you can check if the one you buy actually fits your mobile phone.
People with touch screen mobiles may find it difficult to use their phones through a plastic bag, but in the end, you really want to protect your mobile from the rains! If you use a transparent bag, then you might be able to read and even reply to messages through the plastic bag, but if you want to answer a call, you'll surely need to take the mobile out of it.
Some people make holes in the bag to be able to hear and speak, but then the whole purpose of keeping the mobile safe from the rains is lost. Sometimes, even while maintaining due care, a few rain drops can get inside the plastic bag. In this case, use a clean handkerchief or a dry cloth to keep your mobile phone clean.
If your handset does get wet, don't get agitated or instinctive, but keep your cool. First of all examine if there's no water in the handset ports. Take care not to charge a wet mobile right away, and avoid recharging even if you suspect that some water has seeped into the mobile. You could easily damage your mobile if you go ahead. Also, avoid a faulty or a damp socket to recharge your mobile or else you could end up short circuiting it.
Another way of drying up your mobile is to use a hair dryer. However, you should be an expert in opening the case and dismantling the handset yourself. If your phone is under warranty and you open up your phone, you can be sure that you've lost your warranty. If you use a hairdryer to dry your mobile, don't use the maximum heat setting and don't keep the dryer too close to your phone else you'll end up melting a few crucial parts.
So, you'll have to throw your handset away for it will be no good at all. Another way of keeping your handset dry is to find a waterproof case the size of your mobile and keep a few pouches of silica gel in it. This will absorb the moisture in the phone and keep the circuit nice and dry.
Keeping your mobile safe and dry will help you keep in touch with friends and family in case of emergencies and unexpected situations, which are quite common during monsoons in our country.

Nokia E72 Mobile: Slim, Swift, Smart Phone To Be Launched Soon
Swift, slim and resourceful are three words that accurately describe the new Nokia E72 mobile, which was unveiled at the Nokia Connection event in Singapore on 15th June-09. Nokia's latest full QWERTY smartphone brings a rich mobile email and instant messaging experience right out of the box, making it the ideal mobile for people that want to be productive in both their personal and professional lives.
Building on the formula from the hugely successful Nokia E71, Nokia's best selling QWERTY device to date, this latest arrival in Nokia's Eseries family maintains essential elements of its predecessor, whilst still improving its capabilities in a number of areas. "Despite the outstanding market performance of the Nokia E71 mobile phone, we still continually look for ways to enhance the device," said Ilari Nurmi, Vice President at Nokia. "So we included the desktop like email experience from the Nokia E75 mobile and gave it a new optical navigation key for more intuitive scrolling through menus, emails and fast panning of images. We also upgraded the camera to 5 megapixels and added a standard 3.5 mm audio jack."
On top of these developments, for the first time, owners will be able to set up instant messaging (IM) accounts provided by Nokia Messaging direct from the homescreen. In just a few steps, mobile phone owners will be able to connect to their favorite IM accounts such as Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk and Ovi, amongst many others.
These new IM features are complimented by Nokia's range of email solutions with a lifetime license for Nokia's mobile email and IM service, Nokia Messaging, as well as onboard clients for Mail for Exchange and IBM Lotus Notes Traveler. Accessing popular accounts such as Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, Windows Live Hotmail, Ovi Mail and thousands of other email service providers is simple through improved on-device email setup, with the same easy to use UI integrating all of the owner's corporate email accounts as well.
Performance improvements are evident throughout the user experience including faster Internet up- and downlink speeds. Other notable features which should make the Nokia E72 as popular as recent Nokia Eseries introductions include A-GPS and compass with integrated Maps, including lifetime walk and 10 days of turn-by-turn navigation if activated within the first three months. Conversations are also clearer with active noise cancellation, and a torch can be activated with a single press of the spacebar key. The office capabilities have been updated with a new version of Quickoffice, which delivers Microsoft Office 2007 compatibility as well as free version upgrades when new features become available.
The Nokia E72 is expected to begin shipping late in the third quarter of 2009 at an estimated retail price of EUR 350 (23,300 Rs./-)before taxes and subsidies.

Tips on Making Your Mobile Battery Last a Little Longer
With people getting access to increasingly sophisticated phones that are easily available in the market these days, the most common complaint that one gets to hear is about batteries discharging too quickly or dying in a short period. This article presents a few tips on making your mobile battery last a little longer.
Most mobile phones have animated screen savers that on one hand don't do much to attract and wow users but consume a lot of battery life on the other. You can save your battery life by turning down these applications, or choosing screen savers with lesser animation. To prolong your battery life even further, simply switch off your animations or screen savers. You may also switch off the vibrating mode if you don't need it. Most phones also have backlights, so turning them off or reducing their level can also help save battery life.
Using animated wallpapers and themes can also cause your battery to drain quickly. Normally, most people prefer style when it comes to flashy mobiles, and don't care much about battery life. However, if you constantly outdoors and not close to a charging point, then you might consider using wallpapers and themes with lesser or no animation at all.
Some mobile phones use active applications especially with games, internet, and other handy programs. Some of these applications keep running in the background if you don't exit them properly. So, if you receive a call when in the middle of such applications, exit them properly before you take the call. Many phones use Bluetooth for communication, so if you don't require Bluetooth, it's a good idea to shut it down. Follow other simple tips like avoiding conversations that are too long, for which you can always use your land line if you are in proximity of one. In this way, you will be able to save on battery life, which can become a crucial issue in case of emergencies.
If you are worried that your conversations take up too much of your battery life, always keep a spare battery with you so that you don’t run out of battery power at crucial moments. At the same time, following a few guidelines will help you get the maximum out of your present battery. After prolonged use, the polarities of the battery and the battery posts of your handset could get corroded. Use a soft cloth to clean away the corrosion, and you'll surely get more out of your battery life.
If you really value your expensive mobile, forget duplicate batteries. They are really dangerous to use and can even explode while recharging. Remember the incidents in the newspapers and on TV? Go in for the originals, which can be simply recognized with the hologram identification on them. Use good charging practices like not waiting till the battery discharges completely, and charging the battery completely when you put your phone for recharge.
So, these are a few tips on increasing your battery life. Let's hope that these guidelines work out in your favour and your battery lasts longer before you need to buy a new one.

Nokia Life Tools Services Launched Across India
After a successful pilot in the state of Maharashtra, Nokia today announced the commercial launch of its pioneering Nokia Life Tools service in India. The service will be rolled out first in Maharashtra in association with the Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board (MSAMB). Designed specifically for the emerging markets, Nokia Life Tools is a range of Agriculture, Education and Entertainment services sharply addressing the information gaps of target consumers.
Today, Nokia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the MSAMB. Under this MOU, MSAMB will provide expertise in the areas of commodity prices from their network of 291 local mandis (marketyards). MSAMB will also have the opportunity to deliver relevant news, alerts on schemes and other information directly to grassroots consumers.
Speaking at the occasion, Shri. Ashok Chavan, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra said, "We are happy that Maharashtra is the first state in India to go live with the Nokia Life Tools services in association with the state marketing board. Empowering our people with the right tools and facilities is a top priority for the State Government. I would like to congratulate Nokia for developing a unique and innovative service that has tremendous potential to improve lives and the livelihood of farmers and sub-urban consumers in Maharashtra."
Shri Harshavardhan Patil, Hon'ble Minister for Co-operation, Marketing, Cultural Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs said, "It has been the Maharashtra state government's endeavour to provide vital agri information tools for a progressive and an empowered farmer community. Nokia Life Tools is tailormade to positively impact farmers across the state. This MOU further strengthens MSAMB's mandate to get the information directly to the farmers."
Mr. D Shivakumar, Managing Director, Nokia India said, "Nokia Life Tools was a result of the entire ecosystem coming together and is ideally placed to usher in an information revolution impacting the daily lives of people. We extend our sincere thanks to MSAMB and our key partners for believing in and supporting our vision of 'empowering people and connecting them to the things that matter'. We believe this is the beginning of a historical journey that will take mobility to grassroots and make a positive difference to the lives of people in the areas that are crucial to them."
The complete Nokia Life Tools solution will be available on the newly launched Nokia 2323 classic and Nokia 2330 classic mobile, and will be later expanded to other Nokia mobiles.
Nokia Life Tools Partner Ecosystem and Services
Designed with deep insights gathered from target users, Nokia has collaborated with multiple partners across the Indian Government and private enterprises to bring together a rich ecosystem to deliver localised & personalised information directly to consumers' Life Tools-enabled mobile devices.
Nokia Life Tools has a range of 3 primary services - Agriculture Services, Education Services and Entertainment Services
Nokia Life Tools Agriculture services:
The Nokia Life Tools Agriculture service offers consumers a choice of 2 plans. The basic plan, available across India at Rs 30/month, provides daily weather updates and relevant agriculture-related news, advice and tips. The premium plan, at Rs 60/month, will be available in 10 states, including Maharashtra, and provides the closest market prices for three crops chosen by the subscriber, as well as weather, news, advice and tips.
Nokia is collaborating with Reuters Market Light (RML), which was the exclusive provider for agriculture services in the successful pilot. Syngenta, Madison Research, Skymet and many others also form this ecosystem.
Nokia Life Tools Education services:
The Nokia Life Tools Education service, available throughout India, offers three components: Learn English, with basic, intermediate and advanced levels; Exam preparation, which offers students tips and advice for ICSE, CBSE and State Board-level exams mapped to the relevant curriculum; and General Knowledge, which gives subscribers useful information about the world around them. Each of the Education services will be offered at Rs 30/month. Information and content from multiple local and international companies will be aggregated and delivered to Nokia Life Tools by EnableM.
Nokia Life Tools Entertainment services:
The Nokia Life Tools Entertainment service at launch will include Astrology, News, Jokes, Cricket and ringtones, offered at existing market prices. The content is aggregated and brought to Life Tools by OnMobile.
Nokia Life Tools is hosted by On Mobile in India.
Jawahar Kanjilal, Nokia's Global Head of Emerging Markets Services, said, "As mobile coverage increases to cover the millions of unconnected, Nokia - in India and in other emerging markets around the world - will work together with mobile operators, multiple government and private enterprises, and non-government organizations to empower millions by connecting them to better opportunities that have a positive impact on their daily lives."
Nokia Life Tools was piloted in Maharashtra earlier this year before its commercial roll-out this month. The feedback from actual subscribers during the pilot that was concluded in April 2009 revealed that the service had a wide appeal, and connected with subscribers at both emotional and rational levels. On one hand, the service brought livelihood gains through relevant information such as market rates for farmers' produce, greater awareness on market conditions, tips on weather, news, crop advisory, Learn English and General Knowledge. On the other hand, it enabled consumers to fill their information gaps by being better informed, save time and money, and improve their confidence and social standing.
Nokia Life Tools service will be expanded to select countries across Asia and Africa later in 2009 and beyond.
