GSMA urges NTC of Thailand to license for 3G services
The GSMA, the global trade association for the mobile industry, urged the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) of Thailand to license the 2100MHz spectrum band for 3G services by August 2008. The rollout of 3G, enhanced by HSPA*, will greatly improve the availability of broadband services in Thailand – only 2.2%** of households have broadband connections today and the country lags behind many of its neighbours in this respect.
“Laying new fixed line connections is expensive and inefficient so high-speed mobile networks are Thailand’s best bet to realize the many social and economic benefits that arise from widespread access to broadband services,” said Ricardo Tavares, Senior Vice President for Public Policy of the GSMA. “Although refarming the 900MHz and 850MHz bands will help kickstart the Mobile Broadband market, it is also important that the licensing of the 2100MHz band proceeds at a fast pace, as many 3G and HSPA devices are designed for use in this globally harmonised band.”
GSMA Report - ‘how mobile can bring communications to all’
The GSM Association, the global trade association for the mobile industry, has called on the Indian government to cut in half the 5% levy on telecom operators’ gross adjusted revenues, which is channeled into the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF). The levy is increasing operators’ costs and ultimately the cost of mobile services for consumers. The GSMA recommends that the unspent $2.5 billion in India’s USOF be used to help tackle the bottlenecks, such as a lack of backhaul capacity and electric power, currently slowing down the rollout of mobile networks into rural areas.
"Universal Service Funds are another telecoms-specific tax that increases the cost of access for consumers,” said Gabriel Solomon, Senior Vice President of Public Policy of the GSMA, speaking at the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation’s Connecting Rural Communities Asia Forum. “Globally, 75% of the cash in Universal Service Funds is unspent*. We strongly support the call by Nirpendra Misra, the Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, to cut the 5% levy by at least half and remove handset taxes as that would make mobile phones more affordable for rural consumers and spur industry investment in currently un-served areas.”

Mobile Phones - No More a Comfort, But a Necessity
The long range, portable electronic device used for telecommunication that uses a network of specialized base stations known as cell sites are popularly known as mobile phone. Also known as hand phone, this gadget supports many other services and accessories such as SMS for text messaging, email, and MMS for sending photos and videos. Most of these mobile phones connect to a cellular network of base stations which are interconnected to the public switched telephone network. The history of the phones that require no cable begins from 1945. It was in that year, the zero generation of handsets got introduced. Motorola Dyna TAC was the first approved mobile phone that got released in 1983. The cellular systems needed various leaps of technology including handover that permits a conversation to continue from cell to cell. In the present day, these phones have become a popular device.
NTT launched the first commercial cellular network in 1979 in Japan. It was in the middle of eighties that fully automatic cellular networks got introduced. Radiolinja launched the first modern network technology on digital 2G in Finland in 1991. This was the beginning of the competition among the mobile companies. Nokia mobile phones, Samsung mobile phones, and LG mobile phones are some other leading names in the mobile phone market. The handsets in those periods were of big size and could not be easily carried in the pockets. It was by the middle of nineties that they became portable. The market of this particular type of phones showed a sudden increase in the developed countries. In many European countries, the total number of mobile phones is more than the number of the people. As per a study by Eurostat, Luxembourg has the highest mobile penetration rate at 158 mobile subscribers per 100 people followed by Lithuania and Italy. The mobile penetration rate in Hong Kong is 139.8% of the total population while in the U.S, it is 81%. The growth rate of African cellular markets is twice faster than Asian markets. It is the availability of pay-as-you go services that helped in the growth of the African market. India is one of the largest growing markets for mobile networks. It adds up about 6 million phones every month taking the total number of subscribers to 256.55 million.
The main problem faced by the handset users is the rise in the number of models in the market. Each model comes out carrying features and services that are technically advanced. Sony Ericsson has recently released a few models that are really stunning. It becomes necessary for the user to consider various factors while using a mobile phone. In most of the cases, it is seen that users use up every last drop of their energy before they recharge; which should be avoided. It will be foolish to recharge the phone, while it is not holding the charge for a long time. In such a case the purchase of a new battery will be more beneficial.
The life of the Mobile Phones could be extended by lowering the brightness of the screen back light. The receiving of the signal is a big reason for the drainage of the cell battery. It will be therefore better to limit playing games, listening to music, taking picture or surfing internet on the handset as all these will drain the battery faster. Make it sure that the downloading of web features, games, ring tones, wall paper and screen savers do not recur fees as it may eat a big share of the monthly bill.
The mobile subscribers while purchasing a cell phone with one or two year contract or pay-per use agreement must have a complete idea of the usage of phone. This will help in cutting short the phone bills. Never forget to ensure that the roaming charges are a part of the deal as otherwise the bills will shoot up while traveling. Be careful of the hidden costs before signing the agreement. The user should also make sure that the parts and accessories could be easily obtained from any regular phone store. Even the purchase of the mobile phone from any internet based company should not create problems in availing the spare parts.

Sony Ericsson announces year-on-year volume growth of 2%
Units shipped in the quarter were 22.3 million, a 2% increase compared to the same period last year and in line with our March 19, 2008 interim announcement of 22 million units. Sales for the quarter were Euro 2,702 million, a decrease of 8% on a year ago due to slowing market growth in mid-to-high end phones in markets where Sony Ericsson has a strong presence.
Gross margin was one percentage point lower than Q1 2007, reflecting a less favourable product mix. Income before taxes for the quarter was Euro 193 million, which was at the higher end of the range (Euro 150-200 million) we announced on March 19, 2008. This represented a decrease of 47% compared with a year ago, due to higher R&D investments as a percentage of sales, and reflecting that Q1 2007 was a particularly strong first quarter for the company. Net income for the quarter was 48% lower, at Euro 133 million.
“Sony Ericsson continues to invest in expanding its product portfolio to appeal to a wider variety of consumers in both new and existing markets,” said Dick Komiyama, President, Sony Ericsson. “Our product announcements during the first quarter have been well received by the industry, and we expect to see a positive effect from these announcements during the second half of 2008.”

Two New Mobiles To Peruse
News has been leaked onto the internet about two new Sony Ericsson mobile phones due out later this year. The two phones are the Sony Ericsson G502 and the Sony Ericsson P1 and they should be announced officially by the mobile manufacturer later this week - when more information will be known about the specifications.

Finally there is the Sony Ericsson P5, which is the new smartphone offering from the popular manufacturer. Slightly less is known about this mobile, but what few things we do know are very exciting. The Sony Ericsson P5 is a smartphone with a qwerty keypad hidden under the slide part. The Sony Ericsson P1-Mobile Review
Join me, as I tell you about why I love this king among mobile phones, the beautiful Sony Ericsson P1.
Sony Ericsson - redefining the smartphone
Sony Ericsson are, in my opinion, one of the single best mobile phone manufacturers on the planet. But then, I would say that, since all but one of my mobile phones have been Sony Ericsson (the one that wasn't was a Samsung... nice, but not in the same league). One of the big things they've become known for is their range of smartphones. Over the years, they've produced some real stunners: the P800, P900, P910, P990 (although most people didn't like this one as much, I did...) and the most recent, the P1. That, right there, is their entire back catalogue of P-series smartphones. And yes, I've owned every single one of those. I can honestly say I will, in all likelihood, never use anything but a Sony Ericsson smartphone, for the rest of my life, because, well, they really are stunners.
But why are they? Let's take a look at the latest, the P1, and see why it's so good.
The P1 - showing the world what mobile phones SHOULD be like!
In one word, if I had to describe the Sony Ericsson P1, it would be: stunning! Based around the Symbian UIQ3 interface, with a full touchscreen, and QWERTY keyboard, it's very clear that this phone is designed to be more than just a phone. the best way to think of it would be as a computer in your hand. with a super-powered processor, 128Mb of RAM, it combines the power of something like a Windows Mobile device with the ease of use that we've come to expect from mobile phones.
And that, right there, is why it's the king of smartphones. Not because it's the most powerful (it's not), not because it's the prettiest (it's not, although it is gorgeous), and not because it's the fastest (it's not). It's very simple; it's the combination of those elements. So, while there may be more powerful, faster, or prettier mobile phones out there, the simple fact is that nothing, NOTHING mixes it all up, and puts it all together as well as the Sony Ericsson P1. That's why i adore it, and it's also why I'll be getting its successor, the P5 when it finally gets launched!

In 2007, Nokia sold nearly 440 million handsets accounting for 40 percent of all global cell phone sales. The company is based in Espoo, which is near the capital, Helsinki, and employs 116,000 people worldwide.

HTC Touch Dual is Upgrade to HTC Touch PDA Phone
PDA mobile phones are not as widely marketed as the mainstream handset models purely down to the fact that they are mostly purchased by businesses and professionals rather than the man on the street.
This range of mobile handsets offers far more software options for dealing with office tasks such as email, spreadsheets and PDF presentations and usually feature a far larger display screen for viewing documents as well as in some instances touchscreen technology for menu navigation.
The HTC Touch was the first mobile phone to feature a new navigation technology called TouchFlo, this meant that users could simply run their finger across that screen to flick through their menu and then tap to select an option. The technology negated the need for a stylus which is the traditional way of using a touchscreen device, the stylus is a small stick manufactured from either plastic or metal that is used as a pen would be for touching the screen.
HTC have now upgraded the Touch model and released the Touch Dual, some will argue that it is not actually an upgraded version as ome of the features have been removed but it is the next handset to be released in the range and therefore is classed as an upgrade.
The HTC Touch Dual has lost WiFi capabilities but gained 3.5G HSDPA connectivity on top of the existing GPRS and EDGE Technology. At the touch of a button, a keyboard is revealed beneath the sliding screen with a choice of either a 12 key number keypad or 20 key Qwerty keypad depending on country and operator.
Because of the sliding mechanism, the HTC Touch Dual has also been referred to as the HTC Slide, but its official name is HTC Touch Dual.
As with the HTC Touch version, the Dual utilises TouchFlo technology, enabling users to control 3D images and browse through emails, messages and music files with their fingertip.
The 2.6 inch touchscreen encompasses handwriting recognition with the use of a stylus for those preferring the old fashioned method.
The Operating System as one would expect with today's smartphones, is Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional with Pocket Office and powered by a 400Mhz Qualcomm processor. Offering 256MB of expandable memory, the HTC Touch Dual is equipped with a 2 mega pixel camera with digital zoom and video record and a secondary front mounted camera for video calling.
The Music Player supports both MP3 and AAC audio file formats and USB connectivity makes for easy synchronisation of contacts and calendar entries plus downloading playlists directly onto your mobile from your PC.
Bluetooth Wireless Technology comes with A2DP Stereo support and with Live HTC Home you can view emails, missed calls, messages, weather reports and more with a single button press.
As you can see there have been many improvements to what was a ground-braking handset with added features complimented by a new design. The overall measurements are 107 x 55 x 15.8 mm and the Dual is slightly heaver at 120 grams due to the extra weight of the slide out keyboard.
Users may not be happy with the loss of WiFi but the added 3.5G technology will make for far faster download times essential in todays busy workplace.

Younger people get into mobile banking
Most Americans are still hesitant about banking with their cellphones and PDAs, but young people are increasingly accepting mobile banking, according to a survey.
Serving the needs of tech-savvy customers will be crucial for banks to stay competitive as the collective income of baby boomers' children is expected to surge over the next 10 years and exceed that of their parents.
So far, though most major banks offer mobile banking, 89% of consumers don't use their cellphones to conduct banking transactions, according to the study by IBM's retail banking consulting practice.
The results are based on a phone survey of 1,424 adults, ages 18 or older, conducted Jan. 24-28 by Opinion Research. To qualify, respondents had to own a cellphone and have a bank account. The margin of error was plus or minus 2 percentage points.
The study found that 21% of consumers ages 18-34 use their cellphones for banking transactions, compared with about 10% of the general population. These numbers, particularly for younger consumers, are expected to grow significantly.
Research firm Aite Group predicts that mobile-banking users in the USA, having ballooned from a negligible number at the end of 2006 to 1.7 million by the end of last year, will rise to 8 million by the end of this year.
By 2010, Aite Group forecasts, 35 million Americans will be mobile-banking users.
Nine of the 10 top banks offer mobile banking. Bank of America has the most mobile-banking customers — about half a million — according to Aite Group.
But setting up the technology is just the first step. Reputation is also important, because the top reason for avoiding mobile banking — given by 65% of the respondents — was fear that their personal information isn't secure. And technology is vital because, even though online banking is becoming more common, the notion of doing banking outside a branch remains in its early stages.

Bluetooth Phones - Ins and Outs of Bluetooth
Purchasers of mobiles know what the Bluetooth is all about. For them this is a device through which they transfer data and information. But very few people know – what the Bluetooth is all about? And what is the specifications and characteristics of the new technology. Bluetooth is a short-range radio frequency (RF) technology that operates at 2.4 Ghz. The Bluetooth enabled devices is capable of transmitting voice and data. And it works better at the range of 32 feet (10 meters).
Another question that is being asked very often is: How is Bluetooth used? The answer according to the gsmfavorites is, “Bluetooth can be used to wirelessly synchronize and transfer data among devices. Bluetooth can be thought of as a cable replacement technology. Typical uses include automatically synchronizing contact and calendar information among desktop, notebook and palmtop computers without connecting cables. Bluetooth can also be used to access a network or the Internet with a notebook computer by connecting wirelessly to a cellular phone.”
Another very prominent question that is being asked and it is in everyone's mind is: How secure is a Bluetooth network? According to the gsmfavorites.com, it is “Bluetooth is extremely secure in that it employs several layers of data encryption and user authentication measures. Bluetooth devices use a combination of the Personal Identification Number (PIN) and a Bluetooth address to identify other Bluetooth devices. Data encryption (i.e., 128-bit) can be used to further enhance the degree of Bluetooth security. The transmission scheme (FHSS) provides another level of security in itself. Instead of transmitting over one frequency within the 2.4 GHz band, Bluetooth radios use a fast frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) technique, allowing only synchronized receivers to access the transmitted data.”Another very important question is : Is Bluetooth Phones practical for use with mobile devices? According to gsmfavorites.com, it is “Yes. One concern for mobile computing users is power consumption. Bluetooth radios are very low power, drawing as little as 0.3mA in standby mode and 30mA during sustained data transmissions. Bluetooth radios alternate among power-saving modes in which device activity is lowered to maximize the mobile power supply.”

Cell Phone Etiquette Made Easy
I frequently use my cell phone just as much as the next person, but one has to demonstrate more courtesy when taking a call. Cell phone users today tend to chat too loudly in public, reveal inappropriately information around strangers and quite frankly, are just down right rude when in the presence of company, on a date, at a function or in the middle of a business meeting.
I'm sure you are guilty of one of these situations because I know I am. While I was in church once, my cell phone started to blare off right in the middle of Sunday service. You can imagine how LOUD my cell phone must have sounded as it echoed throughout the church with churchgoers angrily gawking at me. I was terribly embarrassed, but since then learned how to use my cell phone more politely and professionally. It's easy and everyone can do it. All it takes is a moment to consciously think where you are, whom you are with and what you are doing when taking a call.
Family and Friends
It's easy to be comfortable around your family and friends because you know them and you can be yourself. However, that doesn't mean to treat them as if they are not important when your cell phone rings. Your family doesn't get to see you much and I'm sure they love spending time with you. Therefore, when a call comes in politely excuse yourself out of the room or even better, let the call go to voicemail. If you must take the call, which by the way should only be for emergencies, be sure to keep it short. Your family will appreciate it and it will show them they are important to you.
The same goes for when you are with friends. Politely step out of the room when your cell phone rings and let the caller know you are with company and will call them back. Keep the conversation brief and return to your guests as quickly as possible. Calls from parents, children or an emergency should be the only exceptions. Otherwise, don't blatantly alienate your friends. It's rude and I'm sure you hate it just as much when they yak away on their cell phone in front of you.
Business Meetings
Whether you are at an internship, on a job interview or in a business meeting, you should be smart enough to know to put your cell phone on mute or on vibrate. If it does ring, quickly turn your cell phone off and apologize for the interruption. Yes I am fully aware that there are times when you do need to have your cell phone on for calls, but this should NEVER be during a job interview. At an internship it's simple to let your supervisor know you are expecting an important phone call, but as always keep conversations short. It's just the same during business meetings. Let your colleagues know you have to take an important call and again, politely excuse yourself and keep your calls short.
On a Date
First of all if your phone goes off on a date and you sit there chatting away like the other person doesn't exist, don't be surprised if your date doesn't ever want to see you again. A solution around this: send text messages. Yes texting is your friend when on a date, but please, please, please be discreet about it. I often send text messages when I'm in the restroom or when my date is in the restroom. Yeah sure I text my friends to give them the low down on my date, but most importantly to let them know I'm ok and my whereabouts. You can never be too safe these days and communicating on your cell phone during circumstances like this is more than acceptable. But again, be discreet.
At Functions (i.e. movies, plays, funerals, weddings)
Don't make the mistake like I did with the church situation. Please mute your phone or put it on vibrate. Better yet, turn it off. Of course you may need to keep your phone on for the babysitter or to give directions to relatives, but being polite and respectful to those around you is the name of the game here.
In Restaurants
I remember once I was at P. Diddy's restaurant in Manhattan and could not believe how the five acquaintances I was with all placed their cell phones on the dinner table. Hello!! We are about to have dinner and drinks!! Instead, these people were too busy trying to look cute and more interested in trying to impress someone. It was a turn off and to say the least I was not impressed. Rather, I found it immature and very tacky. Keep you cell phone on your hip or in your purse; not on the table.
In Public
This is the number one complaint when it comes to cell phone users. Talking too darn loud in public and/or
