GSMA urges NTC of Thailand to license for 3G services
The GSMA, the global trade association for the mobile industry, urged the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) of Thailand to license the 2100MHz spectrum band for 3G services by August 2008. The rollout of 3G, enhanced by HSPA*, will greatly improve the availability of broadband services in Thailand – only 2.2%** of households have broadband connections today and the country lags behind many of its neighbours in this respect.
“Laying new fixed line connections is expensive and inefficient so high-speed mobile networks are Thailand’s best bet to realize the many social and economic benefits that arise from widespread access to broadband services,” said Ricardo Tavares, Senior Vice President for Public Policy of the GSMA. “Although refarming the 900MHz and 850MHz bands will help kickstart the Mobile Broadband market, it is also important that the licensing of the 2100MHz band proceeds at a fast pace, as many 3G and HSPA devices are designed for use in this globally harmonised band.”
GSMA Report - ‘how mobile can bring communications to all’
The GSM Association, the global trade association for the mobile industry, has called on the Indian government to cut in half the 5% levy on telecom operators’ gross adjusted revenues, which is channeled into the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF). The levy is increasing operators’ costs and ultimately the cost of mobile services for consumers. The GSMA recommends that the unspent $2.5 billion in India’s USOF be used to help tackle the bottlenecks, such as a lack of backhaul capacity and electric power, currently slowing down the rollout of mobile networks into rural areas.
"Universal Service Funds are another telecoms-specific tax that increases the cost of access for consumers,” said Gabriel Solomon, Senior Vice President of Public Policy of the GSMA, speaking at the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation’s Connecting Rural Communities Asia Forum. “Globally, 75% of the cash in Universal Service Funds is unspent*. We strongly support the call by Nirpendra Misra, the Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, to cut the 5% levy by at least half and remove handset taxes as that would make mobile phones more affordable for rural consumers and spur industry investment in currently un-served areas.”

Mobile Phones - No More a Comfort, But a Necessity
The long range, portable electronic device used for telecommunication that uses a network of specialized base stations known as cell sites are popularly known as mobile phone. Also known as hand phone, this gadget supports many other services and accessories such as SMS for text messaging, email, and MMS for sending photos and videos. Most of these mobile phones connect to a cellular network of base stations which are interconnected to the public switched telephone network. The history of the phones that require no cable begins from 1945. It was in that year, the zero generation of handsets got introduced. Motorola Dyna TAC was the first approved mobile phone that got released in 1983. The cellular systems needed various leaps of technology including handover that permits a conversation to continue from cell to cell. In the present day, these phones have become a popular device.
NTT launched the first commercial cellular network in 1979 in Japan. It was in the middle of eighties that fully automatic cellular networks got introduced. Radiolinja launched the first modern network technology on digital 2G in Finland in 1991. This was the beginning of the competition among the mobile companies. Nokia mobile phones, Samsung mobile phones, and LG mobile phones are some other leading names in the mobile phone market. The handsets in those periods were of big size and could not be easily carried in the pockets. It was by the middle of nineties that they became portable. The market of this particular type of phones showed a sudden increase in the developed countries. In many European countries, the total number of mobile phones is more than the number of the people. As per a study by Eurostat, Luxembourg has the highest mobile penetration rate at 158 mobile subscribers per 100 people followed by Lithuania and Italy. The mobile penetration rate in Hong Kong is 139.8% of the total population while in the U.S, it is 81%. The growth rate of African cellular markets is twice faster than Asian markets. It is the availability of pay-as-you go services that helped in the growth of the African market. India is one of the largest growing markets for mobile networks. It adds up about 6 million phones every month taking the total number of subscribers to 256.55 million.
The main problem faced by the handset users is the rise in the number of models in the market. Each model comes out carrying features and services that are technically advanced. Sony Ericsson has recently released a few models that are really stunning. It becomes necessary for the user to consider various factors while using a mobile phone. In most of the cases, it is seen that users use up every last drop of their energy before they recharge; which should be avoided. It will be foolish to recharge the phone, while it is not holding the charge for a long time. In such a case the purchase of a new battery will be more beneficial.
The life of the Mobile Phones could be extended by lowering the brightness of the screen back light. The receiving of the signal is a big reason for the drainage of the cell battery. It will be therefore better to limit playing games, listening to music, taking picture or surfing internet on the handset as all these will drain the battery faster. Make it sure that the downloading of web features, games, ring tones, wall paper and screen savers do not recur fees as it may eat a big share of the monthly bill.
The mobile subscribers while purchasing a cell phone with one or two year contract or pay-per use agreement must have a complete idea of the usage of phone. This will help in cutting short the phone bills. Never forget to ensure that the roaming charges are a part of the deal as otherwise the bills will shoot up while traveling. Be careful of the hidden costs before signing the agreement. The user should also make sure that the parts and accessories could be easily obtained from any regular phone store. Even the purchase of the mobile phone from any internet based company should not create problems in availing the spare parts.

Sony Ericsson announces year-on-year volume growth of 2%
Units shipped in the quarter were 22.3 million, a 2% increase compared to the same period last year and in line with our March 19, 2008 interim announcement of 22 million units. Sales for the quarter were Euro 2,702 million, a decrease of 8% on a year ago due to slowing market growth in mid-to-high end phones in markets where Sony Ericsson has a strong presence.
Gross margin was one percentage point lower than Q1 2007, reflecting a less favourable product mix. Income before taxes for the quarter was Euro 193 million, which was at the higher end of the range (Euro 150-200 million) we announced on March 19, 2008. This represented a decrease of 47% compared with a year ago, due to higher R&D investments as a percentage of sales, and reflecting that Q1 2007 was a particularly strong first quarter for the company. Net income for the quarter was 48% lower, at Euro 133 million.
“Sony Ericsson continues to invest in expanding its product portfolio to appeal to a wider variety of consumers in both new and existing markets,” said Dick Komiyama, President, Sony Ericsson. “Our product announcements during the first quarter have been well received by the industry, and we expect to see a positive effect from these announcements during the second half of 2008.”

Two New Mobiles To Peruse
News has been leaked onto the internet about two new Sony Ericsson mobile phones due out later this year. The two phones are the Sony Ericsson G502 and the Sony Ericsson P1 and they should be announced officially by the mobile manufacturer later this week - when more information will be known about the specifications.

Finally there is the Sony Ericsson P5, which is the new smartphone offering from the popular manufacturer. Slightly less is known about this mobile, but what few things we do know are very exciting. The Sony Ericsson P5 is a smartphone with a qwerty keypad hidden under the slide part. The Sony Ericsson P1-Mobile Review
Join me, as I tell you about why I love this king among mobile phones, the beautiful Sony Ericsson P1.
Sony Ericsson - redefining the smartphone
Sony Ericsson are, in my opinion, one of the single best mobile phone manufacturers on the planet. But then, I would say that, since all but one of my mobile phones have been Sony Ericsson (the one that wasn't was a Samsung... nice, but not in the same league). One of the big things they've become known for is their range of smartphones. Over the years, they've produced some real stunners: the P800, P900, P910, P990 (although most people didn't like this one as much, I did...) and the most recent, the P1. That, right there, is their entire back catalogue of P-series smartphones. And yes, I've owned every single one of those. I can honestly say I will, in all likelihood, never use anything but a Sony Ericsson smartphone, for the rest of my life, because, well, they really are stunners.
But why are they? Let's take a look at the latest, the P1, and see why it's so good.
The P1 - showing the world what mobile phones SHOULD be like!
In one word, if I had to describe the Sony Ericsson P1, it would be: stunning! Based around the Symbian UIQ3 interface, with a full touchscreen, and QWERTY keyboard, it's very clear that this phone is designed to be more than just a phone. the best way to think of it would be as a computer in your hand. with a super-powered processor, 128Mb of RAM, it combines the power of something like a Windows Mobile device with the ease of use that we've come to expect from mobile phones.
And that, right there, is why it's the king of smartphones. Not because it's the most powerful (it's not), not because it's the prettiest (it's not, although it is gorgeous), and not because it's the fastest (it's not). It's very simple; it's the combination of those elements. So, while there may be more powerful, faster, or prettier mobile phones out there, the simple fact is that nothing, NOTHING mixes it all up, and puts it all together as well as the Sony Ericsson P1. That's why i adore it, and it's also why I'll be getting its successor, the P5 when it finally gets launched!
