The Android market is in full swing in India and as per IDC’s India Quarterly Mobile Handsets Tracker, 3Q 2010, Android rose to a 9 percent share from the previous 2.9 percent in 3Q of 2009. This is definitely a significant growth in the last one year.

It is important to note that the number of available Android smartphones is up by19 in 3Q’10. There have been only two in the same quarter last year and the easy availability of cheap and mid range Android smartphones played a major role in this rise. It will continue to rise and there are several local telecom firms that are working on their Android smartphones. It includes Micromax which recently launched one, Videocon, Karbonn, Olive Telecom, Spice and Lava.

Speaking about the new launches Naveen Mishra, Lead Analyst, Mobile Handsets, Research IDC India, said , “In the smartphone segment an increasing number of vendors are displaying confidence in the Android OS, having grown from just one vendor in 3Q 2009 to as many as seven in 3Q 2010.” He added, “This trend is expected to show healthy growth as the Android applications ecosystem widens in terms of its reach into the developer community and number of users, both of which will further prompt device vendors to introduce new models”.

India availed all the major manufacturers releasing Android smartphones within months of their release in western markets. There are popular brands like Motorola, Samsung, HTC and Sony Ericsson. They have four Android smartphones currently available in the market. CDMA market is also waiting for a decent Android smartphones besides the Samsung I899. However, CDMA Android smartphone is not available in India. The Android phone enthusiasts are hoping to see much more novelty as Reliance and MTS are prepping to launch a few models next year.
