Mobile Number Portability (MNP) service launched in pan India

Now, a mobile user, who is not happy with the services of its current mobile operator, will have an option to change the service provider without changing the number. India has more than 700 million mobile users and launch of MNP will make them happy as well as force the mobile operators to improve their services.


MNP service was delayed several times. Earlier, it was planned to launch on March 31, 2010, then June 2010 which rescheduled to launch in October 2010.

On 25, November 2010, it was launched in Haryana and from today, it will be launched across India.

Service Changes:

Customers who want to change their service provider have to pay one time fees not exceeding Rs.19 to the new operator.

Conditions:

Customers have to stay with the new operator for minimum period of 3 months.

How to change your service provider without changing the number?

Customers have to send an SMS to 1900 on its existing operator. They will get a unique porting code. The users have to submit an application form by mentioning the porting code. Within seven days of submitting the application form, the service provider will be changed. During this migration, the number may remain dead for two hours.

Steps to change your mobile phone operator:

* Send an SMS in following format to 1900
PORT
Example: PORT 9800000000
* You will get an SMS reply with a unique port code
* SMS/Call your new preferred operator and mention the port code
* Your existing operator will check with the new operator and if there are no dues then approval will be granted
* You will get an SMS from your old operator mentioning the date and time by which the porting will be done
* You will also get a confirmation code SMS from your new operator about the process
* Your phone may be dead during this switch and within seven days, you will be migrated to new service provider
